Deep Dive or Versatility? Choosing the Right Approach for Focus

In the world of work and productivity, the concept of focus has always played a crucial role. It helps individuals channel their energy, skills, and resources towards achieving specific goals.

One popular approach that has gained attention is the concept of 1x, which emphasizes focusing on a single project for an extended period.

However, another approach suggests the power of versatility, allowing individuals to work on multiple projects simultaneously.

In this article, we will explore both perspectives and help you understand which approach may be suitable for your work style and goals.

What is the Original Concept of 1x in Personal Finance?

The original concept of 1x in personal finance revolves around the principle of living within your means. It suggests that your expenses should not exceed your income, creating a balanced financial equation.

By focusing on maintaining a 1x ratio, you ensure that you have enough financial resources to cover your expenses without relying on debt or accumulating financial stress.

This approach promotes financial stability, responsible spending, and a mindset of prioritizing needs over wants. It encourages individuals to be mindful of their financial decisions, budget effectively, and make informed choices that align with their income.

The concept of 1x is closely related to focus as it emphasizes directing your attention, time, and resources towards one specific area or goal.

By adopting a 1x mindset, you commit to fully immersing yourself in a single project, task, or objective for a designated period.

This focused approach allows you to dedicate concentrated effort, deep dive into the subject matter, and achieve a higher level of productivity and quality.

When you embrace 1x focus, you eliminate distractions and avoid spreading yourself too thin across multiple endeavors. It enables you to prioritize the project at hand, allocating sufficient time and mental bandwidth to make significant progress.

By focusing on one project, you can delve into its intricacies, explore creative solutions, and deliver exceptional results.

This level of focus cultivates a sense of mastery and expertise in a particular domain, which can lead to professional growth and recognition.

Additionally, 1x focus nurtures a disciplined work ethic, as it requires commitment, perseverance, and the ability to resist the temptation of jumping between tasks. It enhances your ability to manage time effectively, set clear goals, and stay motivated throughout the project duration.

This level of focus can significantly impact productivity, efficiency, and the overall success of your endeavors.

The Power of Focus

Focus is a powerful tool that allows you to channel your energy and resources towards a specific goal.

When you concentrate your efforts on a single project, you tap into the power of deep work, enabling you to accomplish more in less time.

The ability to block out distractions, maintain clarity, and sustain a high level of concentration leads to increased productivity, enhanced problem-solving skills, and improved outcomes.

Whether it's completing a complex task, launching a new product, or pursuing a personal goal, the power of focus can propel you towards success.

1x Focus to Work on a Single Project

Working on a single project for an extended period, such as 6 months, allows you to immerse yourself fully in the endeavor. It provides an opportunity for deep exploration, thorough research, and meticulous execution.

With 1x focus on a single project, you can allocate substantial time and resources to understand every aspect, identify challenges, and develop comprehensive solutions.

This approach enables you to leverage your expertise and create a remarkable outcome that surpasses expectations.

However, it requires discipline, effective time management, and the ability to sustain motivation and momentum over an extended duration.

1x Focus to Work on Multiple Projects

Alternatively, adopting a 1x focus to work on multiple projects allows you to diversify your efforts and explore different avenues simultaneously.

This approach suits individuals, like me, who thrive in a dynamic environment and enjoy the variety of working on multiple projects.

By allocating dedicated time blocks for each project, you can maintain focus and progress in a well-rounded manner.

This versatility can provide a sense of fulfillment, as you engage with different subject matters, collaborate with diverse teams, and leverage various skill sets.

To effectively manage multiple projects with 1x focus, it's essential to prioritize tasks, set clear boundaries, and maintain effective communication.

By establishing a structured schedule and allocating focused time for each project, you can strike a balance between depth and breadth.

However, it's important to ensure that the number of projects remains manageable, typically not exceeding three to four, to avoid overcommitment and potential burnout.

1x Focus Single vs 1x Focus Multiple - Benefits and Drawbacks

Both approaches, 1x focus on a single project and 1x focus on multiple projects, have their own set of benefits and drawbacks. Let's explore them:

Focus Approach Single Project Multiple Projects
Concentrated Effort ✔️ Intense focus ✔️ Broad experience
In-depth Knowledge ✔️ Mastery of subject ✔️ Diverse skill set
Clear Project Vision ✔️ Singular objective ✔️ Variety of goals
Increased Income ✔️ Potential for significant ✔️ multiple income streams
Limited Project Scope ❌ Narrow perspective ❌ Potential overlap
Risk of Burnout ❌ Intense workload ❌ Increased stress
Dependency on Project ❌ Project's success ❌ Balancing workload

Pick according to your job or business

When considering whether to adopt a 1x focus on a single project or multiple projects, it's important to align your choice with the nature of your job or business.

Certain factors to consider include the type of work you do, your personal strengths and preferences, the industry you operate in, and the specific goals you aim to achieve.

If your work involves highly specialized projects or requires deep expertise in a specific area, a 1x focus on a single project can be advantageous.

On the other hand, if your work involves versatility, collaboration, and exposure to various domains, a 1x focus on multiple projects might be a better fit.

Assess your priorities, evaluate the potential benefits and drawbacks of each approach, and choose the one that aligns with your aspirations and work style.

From Nov 2018 to Apr 2023 I followed 1x Single Focus by working on 1 project at a time for a longer period of time of 6 months. From June 2023 I have started to follow 1x Multiple Focus because working only on 1 project is too risky and non-diversive.

In the debate of deep dive or versatility, choosing the right approach for project focus depends on various factors.

Whether you opt for 1x focus on a single project or multiple projects, both approaches offer unique benefits and drawbacks.

By understanding your work style, goals, and the demands of your job or business, you can make an informed decision that maximizes your productivity, fulfillment, and success.
